It\u2019s a question that comes up regularly: \u201cCan I have the RAW files?\u201d<\/em>
And every time, the answer is the same: no<\/strong>.
Not out of stinginess, nor snobbery, nor to \u201cforce\u201d you to buy more photos.
No, simply because a RAW file is not a photo<\/strong>. It is raw material, a stage of the work, a rough draft of an image.

Let\u2019s start at the beginning: a RAW file<\/strong> (literally \u201craw\u201d) contains all the information captured by the camera\u2019s sensor.
It is a digital negative<\/strong>, a raw material. It has no contrast, no balanced colours, no style. It is often flat, dull, and above all, unreadable without specialised software<\/strong> (Lightroom, Capture One, etc.).<\/p>

RAW is the raw dough before the cake, the unpainted canvas before the painting, or the draft before the novel.
It is not what you see on social media, in magazines, or in a photographer\u2019s galleries.

Imagine a musician in a studio.
Each instrument is recorded separately, on several tracks.
Then you have to mix, balance, correct the frequencies, add a bit of compression and reverb, then master<\/strong> the whole thing to get a clean, coherent sound that is pleasant to listen to.<\/p>

RAW is the same.
When I photograph, I capture a \u201craw track\u201d.
The post-production<\/strong>is my mix, my artistic interpretation.

Needless to say, that makes no sense.
The photographer, like the musician, delivers a finished work<\/strong>, not the pieces from their internal kitchen.

1. It is not usable for a client<\/h3>

A RAW file is heavy (several tens of megabytes each), and above all, it can\u2019t be read without professional software<\/strong>.
On your phone or computer, it will appear black, grey, or not at all.
It\u2019s like receiving an audio file in 96 separate tracks: impossible to listen to without the right software.<\/p>

2. It doesn\u2019t represent the photographer\u2019s work<\/h3>

A raw photo does not reflect the photographer\u2019s vision.
It is a technical base, not a creation.
The final rendering, the colour grading, the light, the style\u2026 all of that is built in post-processing.
Handing over the RAWs would be like exhibiting an unpainted canvas and saying: \u201cThere you go, imagine the rest\u201d.<\/p>

3. It opens the door to haphazard retouching<\/h3>

And let\u2019s be honest: RAWs in the wrong hands are often a disaster.
A few clicks too many in a mobile app, an oversaturated filter, a brutal crop, and the result has nothing to do with the original.
Except that on the internet, the photo remains signed by the photographer.
So it is their name that circulates, attached to a butchered image.
Needless to say, no thanks.<\/p>

4. The value of a photo is also its finish<\/h3>

The time spent behind the camera is only part of the work.
The other half happens afterwards: in the selection, the retouching, the colour harmonisation and the visual balance of the series.
RAW is the \u201cbefore\u201d.
What you receive is the \u201cafter\u201d, that is, the artistic, polished, signed result.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Yes, there are exceptions.
In some fields (advertising, fashion, press), photographers work with teams of retouchers.
In those cases, the RAW files are delivered to the studio or the agency<\/strong>, which processes them according to the client\u2019s guidelines.
But in the context of a wedding, a portrait, a family session or real estate, it\u2019s absurd<\/strong>.
The photographer is not a mere technical operator, but an author<\/strong>.
What they deliver is a vision.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

When you hire a photographer, you choose an eye, a sensibility, an aesthetic.
Handing over RAWs would be to deny all of that.<\/p>

So no, you won\u2019t get the raw files.
But you will get better: finished, thought-out, balanced images, ready to live.
